My Top Locations for Senior Pictures in MN & WI

Senior photos should feel personal. The location you choose plays a huge role in shaping the mood, style, and overall feeling of your gallery. Choosing the right location helps create a senior session that reflects your unique personality instead of feeling like an industry standard. It’s for those reasons that this is one of my favorite parts of planning senior pictures in MN and WI. 

Some of my senior clients are drawn to soft, nature-inspired settings, while others want something moodier, more editorial, artsy, nostalgic, or unconventional. The Twin Cities, St. Croix Valley, and Western Wisconsin areas have so many unique possibilities. If you’re currently planning your senior session and wondering where to take your photos, here are some of my favorite senior photo locations throughout Minneapolis, St. Paul, the surrounding metro, and Western Wisconsin, all organized to help inspire you.

Personal Spaces for Senior Pictures Twin Cities

While the following sections list out several of my personal recommendations for locations, my clients always have the option to suggest others! If it’s significant to you and outside the box, go for it. This is highly underrated! These are probably spaces that you spend a lot of your time in, places that show what you care about, what you’re passionate about. It’s easy to perceive them as lackluster when you see them often, but an outside perspective can bring new light into them! Plus, we can make intentional choices with styling, props, and/or posing to elevate the aesthetic or vibe.

Unique Locations for Senior Pictures in MN

For my senior clients who want a unique location with a magazine or editorial feel, I have a few favorite go-tos. Local movie theaters, vintage or antique stores, and record stores make for some of the most interesting settings for truly individualized sessions. The indoor setting makes them great for any season for both the consistent lighting and climate control. However, they make for especially good winter options.

A little tip for a movie theater senior session: plan for a morning session before the theater opens.

The Parkway Theater | South Minneapolis, MN

The Parkway Theater in South Minneapolis, MN is one of my favorite spots. To start, the staff is wonderful to work and coordinate with on sessions. As far as aesthetics go, the colors in the theater and lobby are both lovely and vibrant. The red velvet theater seats combined with the pink and teal entry way feels like a perfect art deco piece of history. This is a great location to lean into a more moody vibe (embracing ambient light and filmy editing) or editorial aesthetic (with a more flash-heavy approach). Be prepared to find street parking but know that it is usually very easy to find nearby.

The Heights Theater | Columbia Heights, MN

The Heights Theater is another time capsule location I love. There are chandeliers and tapestries, classic red leather seats, and a red velvet curtain on stage. This location would be great for those who love vintage vibes or more funky and editorial aesthetics. As an added bonus, there is a small parking lot right outside which makes it convenient as well!

Hunt & Gather Antiques | Minneapolis MN

Hunt & Gather is an adventure and you never know what to expect. Filled to the brim with antiques and curiosities, there is no end to interesting corners and quirky props or even rooms full of (creepy) little dolls. This location is best for seniors who love the weird and unusual, probably want a moody or surreal vibe, and are not opposed to having other people nearby. As a heads up, they only allow photos during business hours so customers are present for the session. However, there’s usually so much already going on that nobody pays much attention to us anyways! Street parking can be limited, so plan to walk up to a block.

Electric Fetus | Minneapolis, MN

For those who love music and analog methods, Electric Fetus is a classic spot! The shop holds rows and rows of vinyl records.  A big neon sign from a previous location is hung inside, it features original hardwood floors, and music posters all around. This is a location that can melt into multiple vibes making it very versatile. Whether clients want soft and filmy, flashy and editorial, or moody and a little grungy, we can make it happen. Parking is available on site! For this location, I schedule sessions for Mondays later in the morning or early afternoon when  the shop is closed, but the staff is in office.

Note: For a similar feel in different locations, I recommend Cheapo Records which features multiple locations in the metro.

Outdoor Places to Take Senior Pictures in Minnesota

Outdoor senior sessions in Minnesota do not have to feel like endless Midwest fields. Depending on the lighting, styling, season, and creative direction, they can feel soft and romantic, adventurous, whimsical, cinematic, earthy, or even editorial. Some of my favorite wildflower areas are around Somerset, and right across state lines in New Richmond or Stillwater, WI. Each location has slightly different plant life and atmosphere depending on the time of year.

One flower in particular that I absolutely love photographing is Crown Vetch. It blooms during a relatively short window, but when it’s in season, it creates the dreamiest landscape. The plants spread out like little pillows across large open areas and photograph beautifully with soft movement and texture. And speaking of incorporating plants…

Gardens + Conservatories for Senior Pictures Twin Cities

The Twin Cities feature two gardens that I highly recommend for seniors. The scenery can vary depending on the season and the options are endless for photos with a botanical feel.

Como Park Zoo & Conservatory in St. Paul, MN 

Como Park Zoo & Conservatory is a beautiful area with tons of perks.The gardens outside boast big, beautiful florals that support the little pollinators, wrapping around a small pond and an elevated gazebo. This area is free to access, but is a popular spot for photos. That said, if it happens to be a busy day, be prepared to work around other people. The Conservatory inside requires a rental fee and application ahead of time, but boasts multiple room options that vary from tropical trees and plants to the floral area with a small stream, all wrapped inside large glass greenhouses. The nice thing about this setting is the predictability and there’s walking through fields required to get to the good spots. 

Longfellow Gardens in Minneapolis, MN

Longfellow Gardens is a  landscaped park with varied perennials and annuals. Includes a formal garden, a plant-covered arbor/pergola, and a small, sloped field of tall grass with a historic statue. The garden is located along a creek on the northwest side of Minnehaha Regional Park and covers the land bridge over Highway 55/Hiawatha Avenue. There is a small parking lot, but plan extra time in case you need to park further away. Peak viewing is June through September, so the blooms are at their best, but so are visitor numbers.

My Favorite State Parks for Senior Pictures in MN & WI

Similar to the wildflower fields, the state parks here in Minnesota leave a lot of room for creativity and can accommodate several different styles. Regardless of which one you choose, I have a few pieces of advice that apply to them all:

1. Always plan time to purchase a park pass in advance.
2. There will be bugs. We’ll be in nature after all, so layers & bug spray will be your friend.
3. Be sure to wear comfortable walking shoes for the short hike to the locations we choose. You can change into a more photo-worthy pair once we start photographing, but this will prevent rolled ankles.

Now, let’s get into the locations themselves! 

William O’Brien State Park in Marine on St. Croix, MN

William O’Brien State Park is a favorite of mine because of the scenery. There is river access (except once when it was drained), and there are sprawling, grassy fields, and big treelines. This park is heavy on the nature, and can lean soft and whimsical, or more crunchy granola girl vibes. 

Afton State Park in Hastings, MN

Afton State Park is one of my favorite senior photo locations near the Twin Cities thanks to its incredible variety. You’ll find tall prairie grasses, beautiful sunset views, wooded trails, and access to the scenic shoreline of the St. Croix River. With so many picturesque spots to explore, it’s easy to create a gallery filled with diverse backdrops all in one location. 

Interstate State Park in Taylors Falls, MN & St. Croix Falls, WI

Interstate State Park stretches across both Minnesota and Wisconsin, but I usually prefer shooting on the Wisconsin side because there are fewer school field trips, easier-to-access locations, and a little more flexibility overall.

One of the things I love about this park is how quickly the scenery changes. Within one session, you can go from rocky overlooks above the St. Croix River to wooded trails around a small lake.This location works beautifully for seniors who want something adventurous, outdoorsy, or nature-focused without committing to a full “field” aesthetic.

Willow River State Park in Hudson, WI

Willow River State Park  is another Wisconsin park, but it’s actually closest to me geographically.  When it comes to this one, most people immediately think of the waterfall, but there are also lovely river trails and prairie areas with tall grasses that photograph beautifully during the warmer months.

Downtown Areas for Senior Pictures Twin Cities

If you’re drawn to city lights, architecture, movement, gritty textures, or more fashion-inspired photos, these locations offer a completely different feel from traditional nature sessions.

St. Paul, MN 

I love St. Paul because it doesn’t feel much like a city, it’s friendly and warm and relatively small when compared to other cities. The West 7th neighborhood holds my heart, but one of the most overlooked spots is the metro station. With ambient lights, the train cruising through, and the city’s skyline painted against the sky, it is a great location for moody, urban, and grungy vibes.

Stillwater, MN 

For the classic small town downtown vibe, Stillwater is it! Built along the St. Croix River, this historic town has a lot of exposed brick, creeping greenery, riverfront views, and the historic green lift bridge. There are also nearby parks with open fields and a small riverside beach at the St. Croix Boomsite. 

MN Portrait Studios for Senior Photos 

Studios are great for several reasons: neutral space, controlled environment, & lots of possibilities overall! Here are a couple studios I love in the Twin Cities:

Studio Apparatus in Minneapolis 

Studio Apparatus features hardwood floors, a warm atmosphere, and flexible space with the option to add paper backdrops, lighting, and more.

Style Society in St. Paul 

Style Society is a St. Paul studio opening soon! It has hardwood floors, seamless backdrop options, and cool furniture pieces from their rental collection that we have access to! Plus, it’s easy to walk to Claddagh Coffee and a couple of thrift/vintage stores if you want to bop around.

My Signature Location as a Minneapolis Senior Photographer

While I have a soft spot for several local businesses & locations, Electric Fetus could probably be considered quintessential Gabby Bridge Photography at this point.  I love vinyl and analog vibes (hello, film!), and the rows of records are fun to play in. And, of course, from a purely lighting standpoint, the big windows let in a decent amount of natural light. This also seems to be the location that resonates with most of my senior clients as well based on the amount of inquiries that came in following the first session I had there. By now, I’ve shot four or five senior sessions at Electric Fetus and they’ve all been unique.

However, I would be remiss to not mention Parkway Theater, probably my favorite location for senior photos. Not only are they great to work with, the ambient lights and velvet seats are so beautiful. The lobby has a different vibe altogether and acts as a great “second” location, even though no travel is actually necessary. (Which, honestly, is just another perk in my book.) 

A close second favorite location is my Crown Vetch spot. The blooming window is short, but it’s so beautiful! The plants are like little pillows, and they spread across a pretty large area. It creates a really gorgeous backdrop for outdoor senior photos. 

Wardrobe Tips for Senior Pictures in MN & WI

Apart from location, your wardrobe choices are one of the simplest ways to make sure your style & personality are incorporated. Here are my top tips for planning your senior photo wardrobe: 

1. Plan for layers and for options. 
   Layers are an easy way to change up your styling without actually changing your outfit. Bringing extra options is great, because sometimes you might just not be feeling what you planned on wearing when the day comes. 
   
2. Avoid heavy patterns, tiny stripes, and brand logos. 
   Heavy patterns and tiny stripes can look really busy or even trick your eyes a bit in photos. And brand logos? We aren’t sponsored and those guys have enough money.

3. For outfit changes, think of different vibes. 
   Maybe one outfit is casual and one is dressed up, or maybe one is long pants and one is shorts, or maybe one is a little grungy and one is a bit preppy. The differences show more of you and it creates more variety in your gallery.

FAQs About Senior Pictures in MN

How many locations are included per session?

Most often, seniors choose two locations – usually one in a more nature-based area, and one that is not (either indoors or downtown, usually). In the planning process, we align on what kind of lighting we want if we’ll be outdoors, and usually plan everything around that, but if a location has specific parameters or availability (like the movie theaters or record shops), then that might take priority. Usually we do one location immediately after the other. 

What time of day do you prefer for senior sessions, and why?

Hear me out, early mornings and midday are highly underrated for outdoors! Sunrises have soft light, sometimes fog or haze,and the colors are usually softer than sunsets. Midday is really fun to play with flash and create more of that editorial, magazine look. To be fair, that warm golden hour before sunset is still so lovely (and it seems like most seniors are still very attached to it, for good reason).

How far out do clients need to book, especially for summer/fall?

Generally reaching out at least two months before your desired session date range is ideal (but I also often get clients that book about a month out and we make it work!).

For seniors, I highly recommend planning ahead of time! It’s so easy to get wrapped up in summer fun and then suddenly it’s fall, school is here, yearbook deadlines jump up, and we want to avoid you feeling stressed and rushed. I generally encourage seniors to start the conversation in April and May if you want a peak summer session (June/July), and definitely by June if you want to plan for August/September.

Apart from the Twin Cities, what surrounding suburbs do you also serve?

Note: I do also get inquiries for the west metro/suburbs. However, because  they’re all over an hour from my residence, there is sometimes a travel fee if I travel to those areas. Instead, those clients usually come closer to me, or at least into the cities.
