When it comes to milestone sessions like Minnesota senior photos, it’s my priority to get to know my clients. I knew early on in meeting Eve that there was the potential for a completely unique gallery to match her vibe. Creatives are my people and when I get the opportunity to photograph someone with a vision like hers, I know I’m in for a good time. She was so trusting of the process, open to ideas and feeling silly, and the result were senior photos that, at times, feel like a clothing brand campaign or a music artist shooting for an album cover.

Eve reached out to me to photograph her senior pictures in Minnesota, her first experience with professional photography. As a creative herself, she had a vision in mind for photos that felt authentic to her & her style. A collector of vintage things with a story, including her nearly exclusively vintage wardrobe (great grandma’s 1960s sweaters), she wanted the photos to have a similarly vintage feel. We brainstormed ways to incorporate her interests and props in a way that took a fairly traditional senior photo location and transformed it into an elevated, truly Eve feel.

For Eve’s session, we met at Afton State Park in Hastings, MN, a Twin Cities Suburb. The ample amount of lovely scenery here makes it one of my favorite locations to shoot. The tall, flowing prairie grass, beautiful sunset views, and access to a beach along the St. Croix River makes it incredibly versatile. However, I always recommend scouting ahead of time for this reason. There is so much space that you’ll want to let yourself explore before deciding where to have your session. It’s also worth noting that if you plan on going down to the river, there’s a good amount of stairs to climb down and back up. This will need to be factored into your session time (and your energy level). It also gets dark down there earlier than up in the fields. Make sure to get your state park pass ahead of time!

Apart from the draws I already mentioned, Afton State Park is also near the Twin Cities metro, but it’s often easy to find a quiet spot. This is a great location accessibility too! There are mowed paths through the fields of tall, flowy prairie grass, making it much easier to navigate and also helps to avoid disrupting any wildlife by wandering through random fields. Above all, the aesthetic is the main draw and it was perfect for the vision Eve and I had for her photos.

The goal was to create a senior photo gallery that felt personal, distinct, and creative. My client experience supports this end result, because I take the time to get to know my clients (it’s not just a transaction, it’s a symbiotic relationship). Eve was very open about her personal style, how she spends her time, and how she wants to feel when she looks back on these photos years from now. She’s a great example of embracing who you are, your own unique style, and trusting that I can help show that in the art we make together. She came prepared with personal styling (including one of her favorite baker boy caps) and an open mind, and the end result was a gallery that includes authentic smiles, a vintage feel, and elevated senior photos that feel anything but expected.
