Are senior pictures in Minneapolis still a thing? Absolutely! But they look a little different these days, especially with me as the photographer. Anna’s session didn’t follow a template, and that was the point. From the beginning, it was clear this would be something more layered than what you might expect for a senior session. With a mix of locations, styling, and creative direction, her gallery felt more like a creative photoshoot than traditional senior photos.

With any session, I take the time to get to know my clients and understand what they hope to gain from our session. Anna’s vision leaned heavily into vintage influence, but not in a way that felt overly styled or forced. Her personal style doesn’t really fit into a box, so it was only fitting that her senior photos didn’t either. So, we planned Minnesota senior photos that included multiple locations that were a little unexpected and leaned into details that gave the images depth.

Anna had a really cool goal in mind with her photos: “I want to capture the enthusiasm that I have for my future to get started. I also want to remind my future self that my past self was a cool and kind of odd teenager.”
And I couldn’t wait to take her up on the challenge.

Anna’s interests and style are eclectic and range from the ’20s to the late ’60s. What better way to incorporate unique taste than by selecting a unique location? Enter: Hunt & Gather Antiques. Every corner of this store offered something unexpected. It was full of stacks of old slides, walls of framed photos, collections of dolls and objects that felt like they each had their own history. It created a setting where Anna could interact with the space rather than just stand within it.

That interaction is what makes these images stand out. Instead of traditional posing, the focus shifted to curiosity and movement. The environment did a lot of the storytelling, but Anna brought it to life in a way that felt natural and unforced. This is one of the reasons I encourage my clients to think outside the box when it comes to locations. A wide-open field isn’t the only option for the session to feel meaningful. (Thought we incorporated some of those, too.) Sometimes the right environment adds more depth than anything else.

Our next stop was The Heights Theater Minneapolis. This building has beautiful details from the 1920’s, like the chandeliers and tapestries and the scenery, added so much personality to the session. Before shooting, we prioritized communicating with the location managers and planned around their availability. Once we arrived, we were very respectful of the space (just like at H&G) and I couldn’t be more pleased with the result.

The film photos with the red seats channeled some early 2010s Tumblr vibes in the best way. Senior year is when you’re really coming into your own and finding out who you are. Your photos should represent that, which is why we chose locations that represented Anna’s real life interests and who she is. I absolutely loved the vibe of her session & that she was open to getting creative with styling (we drew tons of inspiration from Suki Waterhouse & Sophie Thatcher) and locations. Hers is such a great example of the beauty that comes from embracing your uniqueness.

The outdoor portion of Anna’s session (and a quick stop by Dairy Queen) brought things back to something more familiar, but still aligned with the overall vision. Tall grass, open space, and softer light created room for more traditional portraits while still maintaining the tone established earlier in the day.

This is where Anna’s family joined in for a few photos, adding another layer to the gallery. It’s a reminder that Minneapolis senior pictures don’t have to choose between creative and classic. There’s space for both.
